Bathroom Vanity Tops To Consider
November 8, 2017

Bathroom countertops have two jobs: staying strong for the long haul and be resistant to water, soap, and all forms of makeup. It must do so for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as we run in and out to shower, use the toilet, brush our teeth, and shave among other things. We will splash water and it will fog up inside. Our toothpaste foam drip onto the top and we will stare into the mirror while brushing our hair. The top cannot ding itself up or collect stains that give it an ugly look. It is the connecting point to our cabinets and mirrors. Whatever surface decided upon, it will be based on budget and style. Here are few options to consider for your bathroom countertop.

Start with the two obvious candidates, granite and marble, which is attractive to home buyers because it gives a luxurious look. It is more affordable than ever, so it is not an expensive renovation as it could have been. It is still more expensive than other surfaces, but it’s heat resistant and sturdy. A slight con is that granite needs to have sealant to keep out certain stains and marble can easily be stained compared to granite. Then, there is laminate, which is cheaper that the other two and comes in multiple versions, all of which are adaptable. It is waterproof, but is weak against heat and can make a dent.

Next up, here is tile and wood. Tile may require plenty of upkeep, it can be constructed in an artistic way in various patterns and colors that cuts down on the lines the cement them. Wood’s con is that water seal is needed always to prevent water from seeking in and destroying it from the inside, but it is a more natural look and feel than tile and granite. It comes  in thick slabs, so some modification will be needed, yet worth the hassle. In the same genre as all of these surfaces is quartz, which is part natural, part infused with other things like pieces of glass or cement. It is heat resistant and can be cared for with sandpaper.

Some factors in deciding which surface to choose is not just budget, but what else is in the kitchen. What looks good with a stainless steel sink? What matches with the color of the wall? Does it give a warming touch with the toilet and, for some places, a bidet? How about the lighting? It seems small, and it is, but it does accumulate when mixing and matching to decide what surface fits all that is needed.
