Whoever thinks of the elegant stone marble usually has the spotless white natural stone from the Italian Carrara in mind. This is one of the most famous marble stones in the world. Whether staircases or artistic buildings or even in the form of marble countertops for the kitchen: marble is used where elegance and style are required.
MARBLE: BIRTH AND APPEARANCE OF THE NOBLE NATURAL STONE
Marble has its origins deep inside the earth. It is a so-called "carbonate rock", which is mainly composed of the following minerals: calcite, aragonite and dolomite. Marble is related and very similar to limestone. Strong pressure and high temperatures led to the transformation or metamorphosis of limestone in the earth's interior and caused marble to form.
In Germany, this stone, which is easy to work and form, is rarely found. But also in this country the noble natural stone is quarried. From the Upper Franconian Wunsiedel in Bavaria comes the so-called "Wunsiedler Marble", which resembles the famous marble from Carrara in appearance.The deep rock is extracted in the most different colors. Numerous variations are possible. From yellow, green, up to white marble nature offers all kinds of color variations.
Marble countertops have more or less dense grains, which look similar to veins. This so-called "marbling" is typical for this natural stone. Marble kitchen countertops are mainly found in country house kitchens. The characteristic marbling of the stone harmonizes particularly well with the decorations of these rustic kitchens.
MARBLE COUNTERTOPS IN THE KITCHEN: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Marble is a classically beautiful natural stone. Nevertheless, marble countertops are not very common. One reason for this is the high purchase costs of this noble material. Marble kitchen countertops are in the upper price segment. However, this elegant material is also a sensitive natural product.
Marble countertops offer ideal conditions for the preparation of food, as they are food-safe and produce no unpleasant smells. However, marble surfaces are particularly sensitive to scratches and stains and must therefore be treated with protective lacquer. The pure natural stone is much less resistant than granite, for example. To prevent stains, water, fruit acid splashes or other liquids should be removed immediately. Over the years, however, the soft marble slabs will inevitably show signs of scratching and polishing, which are caused by daily kitchen work. The countertop changes its appearance over time. It "ages" so to speak and gradually takes on a typical "marble patina". If you don't want to do without marble despite possible stains, you can also have only part of the countertop designed in marble. This versatile stone can be combined wonderfully with other materials such as wood.
